October seems like a good time to talk about those voices we all hear in our heads. You know, the ones that say: Oh, yeah, you wrote that one great article last month, but you don’t have anything left now. You’ll never do anything that good again.

Or maybe this one: Do you know why your child got his color card changed in kindergarten today and ended up with a grumpy face? Because you didn’t breastfeed him and now he will never play well with others!

Or possibly: Your wife says she doesn’t mind picking up a couple of shifts to cover the budget gap. But the truth is she thinks you are a lousy provider. Sometimes she wonders if she should have married What’s His Name from high school.

You can fill in the rest with the voices from your own head. These guys are relentless. They have been around ever since Eve heard the first one whisper: Did God say…?

Don’t worry about being the only one who ever fights such things. When Jesus was baptized, He heard a true voice from Heaven say, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well-pleased.”

Just a short walk later, Jesus heard another voice: If you are the son of God…

Jesus didn’t even bother to adress the “if” question. The identity issue was settled for Him. Instead, he silenced the accusing voice with the powerful, pure Word of God.

I believe I’ll go do the same thing. Happy October.

For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in [me] will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6
