Christmas is Coming, Again.

One of our grandchildren became ecstatic the year he realized that Christmas comes again. Every year! What a revelation. After more than sixty Christmases, I still remind myself of that when I’m packing away the decorations. Don’t be sad, it will come again next year.

But, next year seems so far away when the wind chill factor is five below and the bank account is as bare as the mantel. That is when I remind myself that someday, Christmas is coming forever. Not just a twinkly lights kind of Christmas, either. This one will be dazzling.

The first century writer, John, tried to describe it to us. God gave him a little peek of the new Heaven and the new Earth that God’s people will inherit someday. It was beyond words. John tried. He told us about streets made of gold and a gate of pearls. About a river that flows with healing. And a light that never gets dim. That city will make Christmas in New York look shabby.

All the expectation, excitement, hope, and glitter of our annual Christmas celebration is really a shadow of that day. For those of us who love Jesus and keep Christmas in His honor, a forever Christmas is coming. I can’t describe it. Nobody can. But I can see it by faith, and I long for it more every day.

Remember that, Dear Reader, when the days are dark and cold. Christmas is coming again. Forever. In the meantime, we don’t have to wait even for next year. Those of us who have seen the Light shall be like old Scrooge at the end of the play.

“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens

Let’s do the same, shall we?
