Where do I sign the petition for “Leave the Light Alone” ? Anyone know? I mean, Falling Back will be great this weekend when it’s 6:00am on Sunday morning – unless you are a night shift worker who just got an extra hour of work. It will be even less great at 5:00pm on Monday when everyone has to leave the office after dark. One year, I worked in an office without windows. I left home in the dark, returned home in the dark, and only saw the sunlight on weekends. That was difficult. Even for an eternal optimist.

Thankfully, my friend, Laurie, gave me a picture of a window with a sunny view. I hung it near my desk. It was nice, but I wasn’t fooled.

I confess that I do not understand the motivation behind the way we manipulate time twice a year. I’ve read various theories and historical explanations. None of it makes much sense for this century and our digital work spaces. But, like so many things in life, I’m not the boss of this one. Railing against it will just make me tired.

So, we shall fall back on Saturday night. If we behave in our usual manner, my husband and I will turn the clocks back after supper and then stay up too late, pretending our bodies have already adjusted to this tom foolery. About two weeks into the New Time, I’ll discover I’ve mostly adjusted. Then I’ll start counting down to December 21, the shortest day of the year. Once we pass that mark, even the time thieves can’t prevent us from having just a glimmer more light every evening.

Then I shall brace myself for the inevitable Springing Forward that will torture us in March. Where do I sign that petition?
