I’ve been thinking of Goliath’s sword lately. As in, Goliath the giant Philistine who challenged the people of God and was taken out with one stone from the sling of a little shepherd boy named David. A few years later, David found himself in a world of hurt. His king was determined to kill him and had taken to throwing spears in his direction.
David ran. For his life. And, he didn’t have time to go back home and gather provisions. So, he stopped by the Tent of Meeting (the church building of his day) and asked if the priests had any supplies he could use. (There is an entire sermon in that question, by the way.) The priest offered him some consecrated bread which was past its use-by date. And then David asked this strange question, “Any chance you have a sword?”
The Bible had already told us Israel was suffering a weapons shortage. It seems unlikely the church would have any extras lying around. But, the priest said, “In fact, there is. The sword of Goliath the Philistine is here. The one you took from him and used to cut off his head. It has been wrapped and stored in a holy place until this moment. You are welcome to take it.”
The moral of the story? If you ever kill a giant, don’t sell his sword on e-bay.
And, God may be storing up today’s actions for tomorrow’s provisions. Make them count.
OOOHHHHH!!! You’re good….really good.
Loved this, and needed it for THIS particular day.
Did God call you about this? Cause your timeing is PERFECT!!!
Oh! I’m so glad to hear this, Andrea. I felt guilty about ignoring all the things on my to-do list when I took time to write this today. But it had been brewing in me a while and I felt the unction to get it out! Who cares if the kitchen is clean? 🙂
Awe.Some.
I love this post, very thought provoking.
See, I keep saying you shouldn’t throw out everything. I know several of you are going threw a guru phase of getting rid of things you don’t use on a regular basis but here is a prime example of why not to always do that. I can’t help the genetic hoarder inside me. I restrain it as much as possible but it can over come me from time to time.
Lenna!!! You crack me up!
Asking God to show me what action it is we need to take today in order for our provisions tomorrow…thanks for the reminder that sometimes provision comes from the unlikely places.
Kathy, The sword that you speak of is mentioned several more times in both the old and new testaments. After the Resurection,it was taken to Britan by Joseph of Arimathea and ended up in the hand of Arthur, the last king of the Britons. It was called Excaliber in that time. After the final defeat of the Britons by the Anglo-Saxons, the sword seems to disappear from all records. In the Arthur story, it was returned to Vivian, the Lady of the lake. Some Legends say it was returned to France where it ended up in the hand of Joan of Arc but I can find no colaborating evidence to back this up. The Latin translation of Excaliber is out of Calvary or from Calvary. Some scolars say Excaliber is from the welsh meaning sharp or some such nonsense. Don’t believe them. It was and is the Sword of the Lord. God Bless, Lord William
