I always think of fall as a quiet time.
Of course, that’s only if you don’t count the roar of crowds at football games, the rumble of farmers in fields, the cacophony of ducks on a lake, and the whir of a leafblower down the street.
Sometimes, we have to look for the sounds of silence, as the old song goes.
That’s why I try every day to find a few moments with no distractions. I love a soundtrack for life in the background of my day, but I turn off the music sometimes to soak in the silence. Fall is such a good time to look out at the trees, to notice the changing afternoon light or the glorious evening moon.
Fall is the perfect time to take a breath and remember to “Be still and know that I am God.”
We have to work for it, of course. Turn off the ringer. Silence the machines. Step away from the technology. And, if you are a parent of small children, pray for a simultaneous nap time. Whatever it takes to experience some quiet this fall, I hope you find it. I hope you soak in it and feel the peace that quiet moments can bring.
