I always post on this date something like the title above. “Remember D-Day.” But most of us can’t remember it. We weren’t born yet. Instead, we mark it. We honor it. We read about it, talk about it, study it, or even watch movies about it. This event is so far removed from my life experience that I sometimes can’t even imagine it was real.

But, today, I went to the grocery store.

We live near an airforce base now, so it isn’t unusual to see men and women in uniform doing their weekly shopping. Today, I saw two airmen. One loaded his cart and smiled when I thanked him for his service. The other one carried a bouquet of yellow flowers toward his car. And suddenly I could imagine it.

Young men and women from multiple nations left home, crossed oceans, stormed beaches, scaled cliffs, and fought enemies in the air. I imagined it as if I remembered it. And I was grateful.

79 years ago today. Thank you for your service.
