The holiday season has begun! I don’t know why October feels that way to me, but it does. All things bright & beautiful, all things Currier & Ives, seem to start with October and the promise of turning leaves. Here is the hilarious part. I don’t do any of the stuff that makes fall festive.
I don’t bake pies or put up jam. I don’t think I’ve ever actually raked a leaf. No carving of pumpkins; no decorating with gourds. I don’t even browse Pinterest for interesting wreath ideas. I do put a small display on the dining room table, but it doesn’t take much creativity. And, unlike pumpkin carving, it is zero clean-up.
About the only autumn tradition I have is seeing if I can beat my friend, Anna, to the draw when it comes to dropping off a jar of candy corn and peanuts for the office. Nope. She totally beat me this year. (and we’ve all been gratefully munching).
The truth is, I just love the sense of fall. The gathering-in. The promise of cozy. The folding away of another year and the tallying up of the harvest of good things it brought in our lives. I love the snuggle of it all.
Then, of course, I also love that October is the very threshold of Christmas! But, that is another story.
What do you love about fall?
Well, this year I love that I have a baby coming in fall! 😉
But it is my favorite season. Mostly for things you said, “The promise of cozy” and “the snuggle of it all.” (PERFECT descriptions)
I love the food that the change of weather brings — soups and baking. I love needing a sweater outside, but not yet needing a coat. I love walks through leaves that crunch under my feet. And I love being wrapped in a blanket on a cloudy afternoon.
Great post about one of my favorite things!
Oh, a fall baby is perfect! Such sweetness to snuggle.
That Picture. I love it. Fall is the Thursday of the year – because Friday is sooooo coming. I love bouquets of sharpened pencils. I love spooky weather and turning in. I love the Anniversary of my Motherhood. I adore pumpkin candy. And I love LAYERS. I look so much better in layers. 🙂
The anniversary of your motherhood is one reason I love fall, too 🙂
Here in Central Cali October is Fair Month. The Fresno Fair lasts two weeks, then there is the Madera Fair and wrapping things up is the Visalia fair. But it feels very Midwestern because the fairs all have huge agriculture exhibits, the usual 4H stuff, rides and fair food! The only difference is the temps are in the upper 80s. I am with Serenity though, in longing for layers!!!
I’m so happy you have autumn traditions in Cali. Maybe you can wear breezy layers.
I love the clean, crisp air that comes in my kitchen window when I open it each morning to say hello to God and thank Him for waking me to a new day, and I love that it’s time to make chili and/or vegetable soup and apple crisp (contingent upon the repairman showing up to fix my oven. 🙂
What a beautiful picture, Sara Beth. You actually do bake.
Fall is when I’m “home sick” even when I now live where “home” was.
Fall is chilly mornings and frosty grass.
Fall is longer rays of sun angling across the tree tops.
Fall is meat on the table and jars on the shelf.
Fall is cutting firewood and roasting hotdogs over the blazing trimmings.
Fall is plaid flannel and gum boots, gathering walnuts and hickory nuts.
Fall is a slow rush into the inside-ness of winter.
Beautiful. I totally get the opening line.
